Why Websites Template Suck
Recently the website design and development industry has been flooded with an influx of companies offering low-cost customizable template websites. At first glance, these websites seem like a cheap alternative to custom designed high-quality websites from a professional web design agency. However just remember that when you go for cheap, you are going to get what you pay for. Before you jump onto one of these sites to build a cheap website, consider the following:
- Template-Based Sites are Easily Recognizable
Wouldn’t the fact that they are so popular signal proof of concept? With so many other businesses using it, doesn’t that mean they’re good? If a website is boasting that 100,000 of its templates have been downloaded so far, by using that template yourself, using a cheap template website means the possibility of competing with 100,000 other websites in your industry that look exactly the same. It’s hard to stand out when 100,000 other businesses have a similar website.
- They Are Strict and Rigid With Design
Don’t like where the logo is? Want the logo to be a bit bigger? Too damn bad. Template websites allow for very little creativity with design and navigation. This makes it difficult to come up with a creative design that will stand out while working with such strict constraints. If you want your website to communicate a fresh, vibrant and creative business, a template website is the worst possible way to go.
Most website template services break apart their templates by industry. For example, there’s one template for restaurants, one for mechanics, one for hotels, etc. But think about the healthcare industry for a second. There’s dentists, psychiatrists, chiropractors, personal trainers, and physical trainers all within that one industry. Is one template going to properly fit for all of those categories? Definitely not.
- They’re Cheap
Want to know why they’re cheap? Because the business puts extremely minimal effort into their building your website. They don’t need a team of professional designers and developers because the client is doing all of the work for them. They don’t take the time to get to know the businesses they work with. This means they can get away with having an extremely small team and little expenses. However, as with everything in life, you get what you pay for. Want to spend £25 a month for a website? Well then expect a boring, poorly designed website that will most likely drive away more traffic than it will bring in. The website is often a potential customer’s first point of contact for a business, so when its website is lazy and cheap, the brand image is communicating to potential customers that the business itself is lazy and cheap as well.
